Maltese
Falcon
|
The superyacht Maltese Falcon is the
fastest
personal boat on earth.
She is also the world's biggest boat that can
actually be sailed by one person, albeit her two
1,800 horsepower engines. The 87.5-meter yacht
has three masts which rotate depending on the wind
direction. It took five years in development to
create this unique vessel.
Maltese Falcon was delivered in 2006 and cost $100
million. The sails alone costs $5 million as
they have sensors that relay data about the the
environment to the crew.

Sea Cloud
|
The Sea Cloud’s life story is more thrilling than
some novels. She was built in 1931 in Kiel at the
request of a Wall Street broker. It was his wife,
Lady Marjorie Post, who shaped the Sea Cloud’s
character. She had exquisite taste: Only the best was good
enough for her. She loved golden bath fixtures, Carrara marble, precious woods, solid brass and
antique furniture. The on-board ambiance is a result
of her "weakness" for extravagance. Even today the Sea Cloud embodies that luxury and
love of life – in the two owner’s suites and eight
other original cabins as well in the stylish new
cabins. The four-masted barque is at home on the
world’s oceans as a cruise ship extraordinaire. Those who have sailed with her
return to her again and again.

marine industry. the
Fleming's deep keel provides stability in the rough
seas. Noise and vibration contribute to fatigue and
Fleming has paid special attention to producing a
boat which has become the standard in the industry
for quietness and smooth running. Other builders either charge a heavy
premium for this or do not offer it at all.

WallyPower 118
|
WallyPower 118 yacht is such an ambitious and
innovative feat of engineering design that it
appears to be out of science fiction. This 118 feet
long is capable of reaching 60 knots. The teak laminate
deck, staterooms, and cabinetry soften the sci fi
effect for a warm and inviting atmosphere within a
super luxury yacht that can accommodate six guests
and six crew. The
118 WallyPower won the MYDA, Millennium Yacht Design
Award, for the "Layout of the Third Millennium." It
is also being honored by the San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art as the sole boat in its major
architecture and design exhibition, 'Glamour:
Fabricating Affluence', which ran from October 9

SKAT
|
SKAT’s most striking feature is
the angularity of her exterior surfaces. There are
no curves, save for the forward portion of her shear
line, which sweeps from the bow to about a quarter
of her length aft before melding into her topsides.
High atop the deckhouse, her bridge deck is a
semi-hexagonal fortress with large glass panels
standing proudly beneath a protective brow, slightly
resembling the bunkers that were long ago dug into
the cliffs of Normandy. That same semi-hexagonal
form is echoed in the aft end of the deckhouse, with
her saloon, seating, and entertainment spaces rimmed
by walls of glass.
SKAT presents an almost military bearing, even to
the point of having her Lürssen project number,
9906, painted on the hull in bold battleship-style
block lettering. She abounds with impressive and
innovative features.

Christina O
|
Christina O was
originally a Canadian naval frigate called the Stormont that was built in 1943. After the end of
the WWII Greek shipowner Aristotle
Onassis purchased her and spent $4
million to convert her into a luxurious yacht and
renamed her Christina.
Celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra
and Eva Peron have sailed on her. She was one of the
most famous society venues of the mid 20th century: John F Kennedy first met Winston Churchill on board
in 1957. In 1998, Christina O undertook a major refurbishment. 560 tons
of steel in the hull, fifty-six
miles of new wiring and 140 tons of pipe work were
replaced. This large task, along with the
refurbishment and redecoration of gathering spaces,
was stunningly accomplished in only 16 months, with
more than 1.2 million man-hours and at a cost of
more than $50 million. It was the most extensive
refit project ever in history.

Izanami
|
Larry Ellison, yacht-lover and admirer of all things
Japanese, decided not to rechristen this lady when
he bought her a few years ago. Her name is that of a
central deity in the Shintoism creation story.
Dramatic and even startling in appearance, since she
resembles a military craft, Izanami almost dares
other vessels to take her on—the perfect complement
to a yachtsman like Ellison who’s an unabashedly
competitive sailor (he owns a racing sloop,
Sayonnara) and businessman.

Asean Lady

Asean Lady represents a
paradigm shift in yacht design. She takes an ancient
vessel concept for a wooden outrigger canoe and
successfully applies it into a modern yacht of
impressive stability and efficiency. Her owner,
Brian Chang, worked out the equations for this
revolutionary yacht, which balances an amazing
20,000 square feet of truly functional space on two
narrow, asymmetrical hulls. Not only this 289-foot
steel yacht is stable enough to have survived the
December 2004 tsunami while anchored off Phuket,
Thailand, but also capable of 14 knots.

Earthrace
|
The Earthrace is a
1080-Horsepower, 78 foot speedboat wavepiercing
trimaran that runs on biodiesel fuel. Designed to
perform at high-speeds in the world's toughest ocean
conditions, Earthrace submarines right through
waves. When a wave is encountered, the hull pierces
through the water rather than riding over the top.
The result is a dramatically smoother ride than
traditional deep-V designs, minimizing stress on the
vessel. Wave piercing allows the boat to cruise
continuously at 40 knots in both flat and rough sea
conditions.
Combine this with environmentally friendly fuel,
Earthrace is one of the most awe-inspiring vessels
the world ever sees. She will soon attempt to break
the world record for circumnavigating the globe
using nothing but biodiesel renewable fuel. Sign
