Edmund Fitzgerald

Great lake freighter

The wreck & sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald November 10th, 1975 has been a subject that has fascinated many people. How a storm on Lake Superior could take down a ship with such speed that no distress call could be made has given many a profound respect for the Great Lakes. The ship itself had the length of  approximate 2 city blocks (729 feet total.)  It was launched in 1958 to become the largest freighter on the great lakes and so remained 17 years until sunk.  The incident is the most famous disaster in the history of Great Lakes shipping, and is the subject of Gordon Lightfoot's hit song, "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald."  The precise cause of her sinking remains a mystery.
