SS BREMEN model

The SS Bremen was a German built ocean liner.  At the time of her construction, she and her sister ship the Europa were the two most advanced, high speed steam turbine ocean liners of her day.  The German pair sparked an international competition in the building of large, fast, luxurious ocean liners that were national symbols and points of prestige during the pre-war years of the 1930s.

On her maiden voyage, Bremen departed Bremerhaven for New York City on 16 July 1929.  She arrived four days, 17 hours, and 42 minutes later, capturing the westbound Blue Riband from the Mauretania with an average speed of 27.83 knots (51.54 km/h). This voyage also marked the first time mail was carried by a ship-launched plane for delivery before the ship's arrival. A Heinkel HE 12 was launched a few hours before arrival in New York with a number of mailbags.

On her next voyage Bremen took the eastbound Blue Riband with a time of 4 day 14 hours and 30 minutes and an average speed of 27.91 knots (51.69 km/h). This was the first time a liner had broken two records on her first two voyages.
