Potosi was a 366-foot five-masted full-rigged ship built in 1895 by John C. Tecklenburg. Equipped with a patented brace winches for the lower, top-sail yards and a patent for the fall winches, she was able to take 6,000 tons of cargo. She sailed on the South American nitrate trade until the outbreak of World War I and proved herself very profitable. The total sail-area was 59,770 sq. feet!

On the 18th of June 1899 the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, who showed a keen interest in naval matters, visited the F. Laeisz company and was shown around the five-masted barque Potosi by the legendary Captain Hilgendorf. At the end of the tour the Kaiser turned to Carl Laeisz and asked: "Na, Laeisz, wann kommt denn nun das Fünfmastvollschiff?"

In 1920, Germany’s best cargo ship was handed over to the French as war compensation. Soon thereafter it was sold to Soffia Gonzales & Co. and renamed Flora. In 1925, the great ship sunk after her cargo of coal had caught fire.
