ELCO Commuter Yacht

elco commuter yacht

Elco, which stands for Electric Launch Company, began in 1893. When World War One came along, Elco produced hundreds of motor launches for the British Navy. However, it wasn't until after that war that the company really hit its stride building unique, high quality electric and gas boats and became the premier boat builder of its day. Chris Craft, Gar Wood, and many others produced beautiful boats, but none compared to Elco's yachts.

Elco yachts of the period from 1890 – 1939 were long and low, resulting in unmatched efficiency. Elco boats up to 40' long achieved 20-30 knot speed by nothing more than a primitive 150 horsepower motor. By virtue of their slimness they sliced through the water, didn’t use raw horsepower to pound along on top of it, and left very little wake.

Owning an Elco yacht is a way of life, an elegance and a tradition of American boating at its best. Thomas Edison, J. P. Morgan, John Jacob Astor, the Grand Duke Alexander of Russia and hundreds of other notables had to have one.
