USS DEFIANCE
PG-95
The Asheville class gunboats were a class of small
warships built for the United States Navy in response to
the Cuban Missile Crisis. All Asheville class gunboats
have since been donated to museums, scheduled for
scrapping, or transferred to the Greek, Turkish,
Colombian and South Korean Navies.
USS Defiance was an Asheville class gunboat. The
165 ft boat was
powered by a combined diesel or gas system of two diesel
engines, and a gas turbine. This unique engine system
allowed her to cruise at economical oil use level with
the diesel engines, and to run up to 40 kn by
using the gas turbine.
