LE COMMANDANT CHARCOT

Le Commandant Charcot cruise ship

Le Commandant Charcot is an icebreaking cruise ship operated by the French shipping company Compagnie du Ponant. The thirteenth vessel of the PONANT fleet, she is the first ever luxury ship in the world capable of taking passengers to the heart of the polar regions.

The Commandant Charcot ship is 150 meters long and 28 meters wide. Polar class PC2, it is equipped with a reinforced hull (icebreaker) hitherto reserved for transport ships or scientific expeditions. She can take 270 passengers and 190 crew members. Spaces are also provided for the scientific community. Scientists will be able to retrieve data from fish sonar and the instrument that continuously measures and displays the thickness of the ice.

It took six years to build this marvel of innovation. Designing the ship to sail in extreme weather conditions has affected every detail, including the insulation of the hull and superstructures, the de-icing of the decks and systems, and the characteristics of the windowpanes. The outdoor spaces are designed so that passengers can admire the environment in comfort. From the Blue Lagoon pools to the heated benches on the promenade deck and the giant firepit, each space has heating devices that use energy recovery, allowing passengers to enjoy the pure air of the Poles.

Le Commandant Charcot is equipped with two tanks totaling 4,500 m3 of LNG as well as electric batteries allowing hybrid operation and navigation without smoke or dust. Drinking water is produced on board from sea water and no waste is thrown away during the journey thanks to a large storage capacity.

Le Commandant Charcot became the very first French ship that reached the geographic North Pole, on September 7, 2021, at 10:38 am.

Don't be fooled by some horrible models out there. They all do not have the important feature of an ice breaking bow. Major components of the ship are out of proportion. Colors are wrong. So many details are missing and the whole thing looks like a cheap toy for children.
