MISSISSIPPI III
Steamer
Mississippi III was a sternwheel, steam driven boat that
was built at Jeffersonville, Indiana in 1927. She was
the last steamboat built by the Howard Co. Mississippi
III
was used for inspecting and surveying along rivers until
April 1961 when the USACE decommissioned her at Memphis,
Tennessee.
From 1962 to 1974, Mississippi III became a museum and
restaurant in Saint Louis, Missouri. She was renamed
Becky Thatcher, after the character in Mark Twain's The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer. In 1975, she was then moved to
Marietta, Ohio, where she became the
Showboat Becky Thatcher restaurant and theater. She
was purchased by a group of interested citizens who
planned to bring her to Marietta as part of the
Bicentennial project. Those citizens formed a
not-for-profit corporation, the Ohio Showboat Drama
Inc., and in the summer of 1976, the musical Showboat
was performed as part of the town's U.S. Bicentennial
celebration, by the Mid-Ohio Valley Players on the decks
and an adjacent barge with 3,000 people watching from
the shore. She was permanently moored on the
Muskingum River, near where the mouth meets the Ohio
River.
The
boat was of particular interest because it was the last
of the Texas-deck sternwheelers. Becky Thatcher was
entered into the National
Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service
in September 1983.
In
1984, Becky Thatcher sank during a spring flood with heavy
damage to her hull and superstructure. She was
raised and returned after repairs for the 1985 season.
The theater operated until 2006. October 17, 2009 Becky
Thatcher was moved to Neville Island near Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania. On the night of February 19, 2010, during
severe winter weather conditions, the showboat Becky
Thatcher sank at her mooring on Neville Island in the
Ohio River.
This Mississippi III model was commissioned in 2019 by two siblings whose father was the captain of the Mississippi
III. The hull is only 12" long but details are sharp. Note the clean-cut doors and windows.
