SUDAN STEAMSHIP
The Steam Ship Sudan is a steamer Nile
cruise ship that was built for King Fouad in 1885.
In 1911, the
legendary entrepreneur Thomas Cook acquired the Sudan
and another large ship. These boats cut down the tour
from Cairo to just 20 days and thus attracted more and
more tourists.
In 1937, the queen of
crime Agatha Christie stepped onboard to sail down the
Nile and travelled throughout Egypt. That cruise, and
the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan, inspired her to write
her famous novel ‘Death on the Nile’.
Some scenes
of the ITV television film of Agatha Christie's Death on
the Nile were filmed aboard the SS Sudan.
The steamship Sudan spent the latter years of the 20th century
laid up and in deteriorating condition but new French
owners bought her in 2000 and returned her to service in
2001. Almost one hundred years old, the steamship Sudan
is the last witness to the Belle Epoque days of Nile
cruising.
