TYPHOON
SUBMARINE MODEL
The Typhoon
submarine was one of the most
terrifying weapons ever created. Each of these
Cold War leviathans could devastate two hundred targets
with warheads six times more powerful than the one that exploded
in
Hiroshima.
A Typhoon
submarine was 574 feet long. While the
Ohio subs had a beam of forty-two feet, Typhoon subs
were a staggering 74 feet wide. The
result was a submarine that, at 48,000 tons, was more than twice the submerged displacement of
the American submarine.
Not only
were the Typhoon class submarines nearly two football
fields long at 574 ft, but the weapons they threatened
the West with were extremely substantial and lethal.
To strike
the the United States from arctic bastions, a new long
range nuclear-tipped missile was developed. The R-39 (NATO
code name: “Sturgeon”) was a huge three stage
ballistic missile that is 53 feet long and weighing
eighty-four tons. Any point in the continental
United States was within its range.
A single R-39
packed ten 100-kiloton warheads, each
independently targetable so that a single missile could
strike ten different targets. This drove up the size and weight
of the missile, but it also meant that each Typhoon
submarine had a
grand total of two hundred warheads. The missiles were built in two rows of
ten missile silos each. Unlike other missile submarines,
the silo field was in front of the sail, giving the
Typhoon class its unconventional appearance.
The
Typhoons
were designed to launch their missiles from relatively
close to the Soviet Union, allowing them to operate
north of the Arctic Circle, where Soviet air and naval
forces could protect them. As a result, a Typhoons submarine
had a reinforced hull that was capable of
breaking through polar ice, a large reserve buoyancy to
help it surface through ice and a pair of shielded
propellers to protect them from collisions with ice.
A
surprising element of the Typhoon-class boat is that,
despite its massive size, it was actually somewhat quiet
and stealthier than many smaller submarines. Coating
materials and shock-absorption reduced the acoustic
signature of the submatine. To reduce the acoustic
signature a two-spool system of rubber-cord pneumatic
shock-absorption was employed as well as a block layout
of gears and equipment, a new sound isolation and
andrihydroacoustic coating.
A Typhoon submarine is
powered by two nuclear reactors, two 50,000hp
steam turbines and four 3,200KW turbo generators. With
nearly one hundred thousand shaft
horsepower, it can sail at a astonished speeds of 22.2kt on the
surface and 27kt submerged.
Although the Typhoon
submarines are no longer actively patrolling the
Northern Seas, they remain the world’s largest submarine
ever to exist.
