USS HARDER SS-257
The USS Harder is a Gato-class submarine of
the United States Navy.
During the war, the USS Harder was
credited with sinking four Japanese destroyers, two
frigates and 20.5 freighters/tankers. This record is the
most warships sunk by a single submarine in U.S. Navy
history, and the most of
any submarine of any nation.
The vessel received six
battle stars for its service during WWII, as well as the
Presidential Unit Citation for its first five patrols.
Samuel D.
Dealey (1906–1944),
the sub’s
the resolute and resourceful commander throughout
her service, "a submariner's submariner", was
posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, as well as
four Navy Crosses during his lifetime.
In USS
Harder's final
patrol saw it seek out new targets alongside the USS
Hake near Dasol Bay in the northern Philippines.
The pair started to
hunt two Japanese ships. Harder fired three torpedoes
before it fell victim to a series of depth charges. The
Hake took evasive maneuvers, but the USS Harder was not so
lucky.
