Charles Morgan is an whaling ship built in 1841. She was the most successful American whale ship ever built. Second to USS Constitution, the whaler is the oldest seaworthy vessel in the world. She had a complement of 26.

Charles Morgan ship

Sailing from Bedford, the ship Charles Morgan would round Cape Horn and travel north through the Pacific in search of sperm whales. These voyages kept the ship and her crews away from home for an average of 40 months. Charles Morgan was very profitable. She made 37 voyages in her eighty years of service.

The ship Charles Morgan has served as a museum ship since the 1940s and is now an exhibit at the Mystic Seaport museum in Mystic, Connecticut. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966, she is the world's oldest surviving merchant vessel and the only surviving wooden whaling ship from the American merchant fleet (of an estimated 2,700 built.) Charles Morgan ship appears in three movies: Miss Petticoats, Down to the Sea in Ships, and Java Head.
