USS CONSTITUTION
Ship Description:
USS Constitution was a three-mast frigate
of the United States Navy. She was built by Edmund Hartt
in Boston and launched in 1797. When completed,
she had an armament of 32×24 pounder long guns, 20×32
pounder carronades, and 2×24 pounder bow chasers.
About the construction of the
USS Constitution
wooden scale model:
Our USS Constitution model
represents the Old Ironsides as she appeared during her
most glorious years, 1812-1815. The beautiful stern
gallery, among other features, is of the USS
Constitution of that period. The model has authentic
rigging which is complex and comprised of ropes of many
different sizes. This superior rigging is one of Model
Ship Master's signatures, and together with the
realistic billowing sails, this model will look just
magnificent in your home or office. The copper-plated
bottom is formed by individual copper pieces which is
weathered unevenly to add a tough appearance to the
historic warship that was never defeated in battle. Note
that the plates are real, not "simulated." This feature
is so important and we do not settle with fake lines
which cut time and skill tremendously.

plank-on-frame
construction (very
important)

create a realistic look (no paint, no fake lines.)
-
Under the main deck, all guns are "real" guns which
have proper barrels and wooden carriages which sit on a
real deck. These
guns are not simple barrels inserted into a solid hull
like in a cheap model.
- Authentic Extensive rigging system comprised of many
different sizes of rope and features numerous blocks and
deadeyes
- Full length masts and bowsprit per original blueprints
- Correct and beautiful boats on deck
- Beautiful stern gallery that no other models can match
History of the
Constitution:
USS Constitution (and also her
sisters such as the
USS Constellation
and the
USS
United States)
were larger and more heavily armed and built than
standard frigates of the period. However,
her one
acre of sail and a slim underbody could push her to a
remarkable top speed of 14 knots. In fact, she was faster
than any ships of the line and frigates except the
USS
United States.
With strong guns, a tough hull, fast speed, and an
ingenious captain, the USS Constitution was the most
formidable ship of her class.
USS
Constitution was perhaps the number one historic
ship in the hearts of Americans. In 1815,
she shocked the world by engaging and captured two British men-of-wars at the same time.
In 1812, she captured the HMS Guerriere after a
ferocious battle.
USS Constitution's heavier guns
devastated the
Guerriere within 15 minutes of the battle. Guerriere's
mizzenmast fell overboard to starboard, acting like a
rudder and dragging her around, allowing the Constitution to cross ahead of Guerriere, firing a
raking broadside which brought down the main yard. Later, when asked if the HMS Guerriere was
prepared to surrender, Captain Dacres responded "Well,
Sir, I don't know. Our mizzen mast is gone, our fore and
main masts are gone - I think on the whole you might say
we have struck our flag."
The USS Constitution's
planks were up to seven inches thick and her design was
unique for its time because of a diagonal cross-bracing
of the ship's skeleton that contributed considerably to
the ship's structural strength.
During the
battle, the seamen,
astonished at how the British cannonballs were
bouncing off the Constitution's hull, cried out -
"Huzzah! Her sides are made of iron!"
Hence, her nickname, "Old Ironsides."
In
1844, USS Constitution became the very first American
ship that
circumnavigated the globe. She is now world’s
oldest commissioned warship still afloat.
