FAMOUS CLASS COAST GUARD
An accurate model of the USCG medium endurance cutter

The Famous class cutters are the only medium endurance cutters in the Coast Guard equipped with a helicopter hanger which can accommodate either a single HH-65 Dolphin, or HH-60J Jayhawk. The Famous cutters were also the first to be equipped with automated command and control information management system.

Famous class cutter

Famous-class cutters are primarily assigned law enforcement, defense operations, and search-and-rescue missions. Their law enforcement missions have included drug and illegal immigrant operations and fisheries enforcement activities. These ships are the most modern and advanced medium endurance cutters, with a modern weapons and sensor suite. They are equipped with a sophisticated command, display, and control computerized ship-control system which provides for maximum operational effectiveness with reduced crews. The crew consists of 14 officers and 86 enlisted persons.

The Coast Guard harvested weapons systems components from decommissioned Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates. Equipment such as the Mark 75, 76 mm/62 caliber gun mounts, gun control panels, barrels, launchers, junction boxes, and other components from decommissioned Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates were returned to service aboard Famous-class cutters in order to extend their service lives into the 2030s.

All cutters of the famous class are assigned to the Atlantic Ocean, where their primary missions are maritime law enforcement and search and rescue.

There are 13 members of this class of 270-foot medium endurance cutter, with hull numbers in the range from WMEC-901 through WMEC-913. The USCGC Bear, the first of class, was laid down at the Tacoma Boatbuilding Company yard in August of 1979, launched in September of 1980, and entered commissioned service in February of 1983. The final ship of the class, the USCGC Mohawk was commissioned in March, 1991.

It's the accuracy that counts. Beautiful yet intricate details take much more time to make and require higher skill. When you are comparing models, use a large-screen device to view the model, as a phone is too small and all models appear the same or different marginally. Look for photos of all angles, photos that clearly show the guns, the propellers, the boats, the radars...
