The Sea Cloud was the
largest private yacht ever built. The yacht's
owner spared no expense in its fitting out.
She had a remarkable career entertaining royalty and
being used on diplomatic missions.
In World War II, despite the initial objection
of President Roosevelt who felt that she was simply
too beautiful to be sacrificed, the ship was loaned
to the U.S. Coast Guard and served against
German U-Boats. Stripped of her masts, painted gray
and fitted with anti-submarine guns, she served as a
weather observation platform in the Atlantic.
In 1978, German investors purchased and
significantly refurbished the yacht. Sea Cloud entered passenger service with a
capacity of 65 passengers and 61 crew.
Sea Her most remarkable feature is its four masts,
29 sails and the tangled web of lines stretching
skyward 178 feet to support the rigging.
Today, Sea Cloud still feels very much like a
private home and boasts some of the most attractive
public rooms and cabins at sea. Few ships can
match the beauty of her teak decks. The magic of
the billowing sails create an experience that is
impossible to duplicate.
Like all of our
superyacht models, this SEA CLOUD model has
the following qualities:
(very important), weighing
less than 10 lbs (A solid hull of this model would
weigh over 40 lbs, requiring 2 people to handle and
a fortified table to accommodate.)
- The hollow superstructure is comprised of many
individual thin pieces of wood glued together, not
several solid pieces of wood stacking on top one
- Windows are cutouts (not black decals), thanks to
the hollow structures.
- >95% of parts are wood and metal.
