TYPE 055 DESTROYER

According to the U.S. Naval Institute, Type 055 Renhai-class guided-missile cruisers are among the most formidable warships afloat. They represent the culmination of China’s efforts to build powerful long-range surface combatants to project power and escort the PLAN’s growing fleet of aircraft carriers.

Type 055 destroyers are the largest surface combatant in the world with a full load displacement of about 13,000t. For comparison purposes, the US Navy’s Ticonderoga-class cruiser is 9,800 tons and the Royal Navy Type 45 about 8,500 tons. Type 055 has a maximum speed of 30 knots.

The Type 055 adopts a conventional flared hull with distinctive stealthy features including an enclosed bulbous bow that hides mooring points, anchor chains and other equipment. A continuous structure amidship increases internal volume and reduces radar cross-section. The smoke stack design reduces both infrared signature and radar cross-section.

First ship of the class, the ‘Nanchang’ was launched on June 28, 2017 and the second one was launched in April 2018. Two more Type 055 were launched in 2018, two more in 2019 and and additional two in 2020 bringing the total of hulls currently in the water to eight.

The Type 055 fulfills a similar role as the Ticonderoga-class cruiser. They are armed with 112 universal vertical launch system missile tubes, with 64 launchers fitted forward in an 8x8 configuration, and 48 launchers further aft in a 6x8 configuration. The universal launchers carry a mix of HHQ-9B surface-to-air missiles, which have a range in excess of 100 nautical miles, and YJ-18 antiship cruise missiles with a 290 nm range. The large VLS tubes also can accommodate antisubmarine missiles or potentially land-attack cruise missiles and antiship ballistic missiles. The aircraft hangar is large enough to accommodate two maritime helicopters such as the Harbin Z-9 or the newer Z-20F, which is similar to the Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk.

Multiple sensors, including the four-panel Type 346B active electronically scanned array radar, are housed in an integrated mast that enhances signature reduction. The Type 055s are fitted with a hull-mounted sonar forward and can employ variable-depth and towed-array sonars aft.

This primarily wood scratch-built type 055 destroyer model is 20.5" long x 7" tall x 4" wide. This model is in stock and can be shipped within five business days. Email us for price.
