USS CORONADO (LCS-4)
COMMISSIONING CEREMONY
The Model Ship Master team
was invited to attend the commissioning of the USS
Coronado which occurred on April, 5, 2014 on Coronado
Island (across the San Diego Maritime Museum which has
several of our models on permanent displays.)
As ship lovers, we took hundreds photos and numerous
videos of the new ship. Due to limited
Internet bandwidth, we can only post some of them here
for your enjoyment. Many of the photos are rare
and probably can not be found anywhere else but you are
welcome to download and use them. Independent
modelers who want clear, large photos for your projects
do not hesitate to contact us.
The USS Coronado is the
fourth littoral combat ship (LCS) of the US Navy.
Littoral combat ships are designed to be agilely fast
and stealthy. They are relatively small
vessels intended for operations in the littoral zone
(close to shore).
As with other ship of its
class, the USS Coronado has three mission packages: mine
warfare (MIW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) (see
photos below) and anti-surface warfare (SUW).
Those mission packages need mission modules.
Mission models may be integrated into standard-sized
containers that can be installed inside the ship.
They are designed to be changed and working within 24h.
The mine warfare model
includes the a remote minehunting system, sonar mine
detecting set, organic airborne surface influence sweep,
airborne laser mine detection system and airborne mine
neutralization system.
The anti-submarine warfare module includes the Sea TALON
(tactical littoral ocean network) undersea surveillance
system which integrates a range of acoustic sensors with
semi-submersible vehicles and network-centric
communications. The semi-submersible AN/WLD-1 with
an ASW mission system, tows a remote towed active
source, a multiband transducer with a remote towed array
multi-function sonar.
The anti-submarine warfare module also includes systems
to be deployed from the MH-60R helicopter (equipped with
mk54 torpedoes, sonobuoys, Raytheon AN/AQS-22 airborne
low-frequency sonar) and unmanned surface vehicles, USVs
(dipping sonar, multi-static active sonar and ULITE
ultra-lightweight towed array.)
The anti-surface warfare module includes a General
Dynamics mk46 30mm cannon, which fires at up to 200
rounds a minute, and a version of the US Army's
precision attack missile system. The direct attack
missile has a dual-mode infrared and semi-active laser
seeker, multimode warhead and range up to 40km.
The USS Coronado can
launch two mission packages simultaneously.
